Description:

This programme is particularly appealing if you are interested in exploring the universe through physics and pursuing a career in the space industry. Are there planets around stars beyond our own Sun? Could life exist elsewhere in the universe? How did the universe begin? Do black holes really exist? Students will gain an understanding of how ground-based and space-based technologies are used to explore the Universe and how modern science can be used to understand it, answering some of these fundamental questions. This is primarily a physics degree programme, with an emphasis on the applications of physics in astrophysics and space science.

The course contains core modules in physics, mathematics, astronomy and space science, as well as optional modules through the Horizons programme. There are three required mathematics modules in first year and two in second year. Advanced topics include stellar and planetary formation and evolution, black holes, galaxies and cosmology. Related modules on relativity, high-energy particle physics, nuclear physics and quantum mechanics provide a rigorous foundation in the physics underpinning astronomy and astrophysics. Astronomers pursue knowledge and understanding of the underlying processes at work in the universe through physics. Physics, in its broadest sense, is the study of the fundamental laws and forces which shape the natural world. The core of the degree programme is therefore an Institute of Physics accredited honours BSc qualification in physics.

Prerequisites:

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
Domestic applicants require passes in six subjects (including two at minimum HC3) including: Irish, English, Mathematics (minimum Grade B3 LC Ordinary Level/ D3 LC Higher Level), one laboratory science subject, and two other recognised subjects. NB: One of Physics or Mathematics or Applied Mathematics must be presented at minimum Grade C3 Higher Level.

Grade 12 Secondary School Diploma: The minimum for consideration is minimum score of C in six subjects, which includes a minimum of B in two subjects, with English and specific programme requirements.
